Responsive superplasticizers for active rheology control of cementitious materials

Actual concrete mixtures and casting processes do not enable on-demand real-time adjustment of the rheology fresh concrete, forcing operators to passively rely on intrinsic evolution material properties during processing. Newly-developed functional polymers responsive external electromagnetic trigger signals can be used as chemical admixtures in cementitious materials active control (ARC) stiffening (ASC) demand. Polycarboxylate ether (PCE) based superplasticizers given extra functionalities by incorporating specific groups. A TEMPO-based extension PCE enables redox-controlled adsorption cement particles, adjusting rheological properties. DOPA-based combination with magnetic nanoparticles magneto-rheological control. This paper presents laboratory proof concept results opens a ground-breaking route for post-mixing stage.
